Experiential religion began with “Immanuel – God with us.”

Matthew 1:23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

Experiential religion is perhaps the most amazing reality of the New Testament. Religion is no longer primarily about learning the law and memorizing facts about God. Through our faith in Christ, not only is God with us; the Spirit of God literally dwells within us. That God dwells within us means that we also have the opportunity to experience close personal relationship with Him. And personal relationships are about communication. God communicating with us and we with Him! It means that if you truly want Him to be the Lord of your life you will hear His voice.

This very important aspect of our Christian life, however, is not much focused upon in most churches today. The primary focus seems to be Old Covenant based. A strong emphasis is placed upon learning the law and memorizing facts about God rather than communicating with Him on a personal level. Standard prayers are even prescribed as acceptable personal communications which then become liturgies in corporate church environments. Imagine how our loved ones would feel if we habitually communicated with them using standardized statements and replies and mostly only in public settings!

Try talking to God about anything and everything. Even the seemingly insignificant things in your life; the things you may be thinking are beneath His attention. I believe He would love it if you would do this. And if you are believing that He exists, that He dwells within you, and that He rewards those who earnestly seek him, you will come to recognize His voice.

Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

How should we feel about those who have done evil to us?

We are to “Trust in the Lord and do good.” Psalm 37:3

Our victory comes when we turn away from our past and begin to live our present life unto the Lord.

A Psalm of David
Psalm 37

1 Do not fret because of evildoers,
Be not envious toward wrongdoers.

2 For they will wither quickly like the grass
And fade like the green herb.

3 Trust in the LORD and do good;
Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.

4 Delight yourself in the LORD;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.
